5 must visit places in Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto was undoubtedly our favorite destination in Japan. Known as the cultural heart of the country, Kyoto is a city that perfectly blends ancient tradition with modern charm. From its iconic temples and peaceful bamboo forests to its vibrant geisha districts and serene tea houses, Kyoto offers an enchanting experience that’s unlike anywhere else.

In this blog, we’ll guide you through the absolute must-do things in Kyoto, sharing our favourite spots, hidden gems, and experiences that truly made this city unforgettable.

Fushimi Inari Taisha

Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks, renowned for its thousands of vibrant orange torii gates that create winding pathways up the sacred Mount Inari. This Shinto shrine, dedicated to Inari.

When you arrive, you’ll first encounter the main hall at the base of the mountain, where you can offer prayers and admire the shrine’s intricate architecture. From there, the famous torii gates lead you onto trails of varying lengths. If you’re up for a challenge, the full hike to the summit takes 2-3 hours and offers breathtaking views of Kyoto. However, you can choose to walk partway and turn back, completing a manageable loop while still enjoying the serene beauty of the gates.

As you venture further along the trail, the crowds thin out, making it easier to capture those picture-perfect moments without interruptions. It’s free to visit, and for the best experience, arriving early in the morning is recommended to avoid the peak crowds. That said, even if you arrive later, like we did around 11 a.m., the site is still magical, and you can find plenty of opportunities for stunning photos.

KIYOMIZU - DERA TEMPLE

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of Kyoto’s most iconic and cherished landmarks, drawing both locals and visitors from around the world. Perched on the hillside, this historic temple is famed for its magnificent wooden stage, which rises 13 meters above the ground on towering wooden columns. From here, in every season it provides beautiful views, but most pretty in spring with the blossom and autumn. The temple grounds are equally enchanting, featuring beautifully preserved outbuildings, serene pathways, and the Waterfall, where visitors can drink from its three streams said to bestow longevity, success, and wisdom.  Right by the temple is a traditional street full of teahouses, and shops.

KINKAKU -JI (GOLD PAVILION)

Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most dazzling and unforgettable landmarks. The temple is covered entirely in gold leaf, creating a radiant spectacle that reflects beautifully on the surrounding pond, making it a photographer’s dream. Located a little outside the city center, Kinkaku-ji is well worth the journey for the chance to witness such a remarkable site. While visitors are not able to enter the pavilion itself, the experience of strolling through the meticulously landscaped grounds is enchanting. The pathway winds around a tranquil pond, offering stunning views of the golden temple from different angles, each more picturesque than the last.

DAIGO-JI TEMPLE

Daigo-ji Temple is a must-visit for anyone looking to escape the crowds and experience a more peaceful side of Kyoto. When we visited, we were delighted to find that there were only two other people in the entire complex, giving us the rare opportunity to explore in quiet solitude.

Upon arrival, you’ll enter through the gate and purchase your ticket before being greeted by the beauty of a traditional Japanese garden. The garden provides a calm introduction before you make your way to the temple complex, which is home to several stunning buildings. Among the highlights is the magnificent five-story pagoda, an impressive wooden structure that stands tall and proud against the backdrop of the temple grounds.

At the end of the temple complex, a charming wooden bridge leads to a small, serene temple—perfect for photos and peaceful contemplation. The entire site feels tranquil and calm, allowing you to wander freely and take in the natural beauty without feeling rushed.

Daigo-ji is one of those places that invites you to slow down, relax, and soak in the quiet atmosphere.

ARASHIYAMA

Arashiyama, a district in the western part of Kyoto, is a must-visit for nature lovers and those seeking a mix of culture and adventure. Famous for its iconic bamboo forest, the district offers so much more beyond this picturesque pathway.

Bamboo Forest:
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s most photographed spots, and for good reason. Walking through the towering stalks of bamboo is an otherworldly experience, with the tall, swaying bamboo creating a soothing, almost magical atmosphere. It’s a must-do for any visitor and perfect for getting some stunning photos.

Monkey Park Iwatayama:
A short hike up the hill will lead you to the Monkey Park Iwatayama, where you can observe wild, pink-faced Japanese macaques. The park offers amazing views of Kyoto and is a fun, interactive experience for anyone interested in wildlife.

Sogenchi Teien & Tenryu-ji Temple:
Nearby, the beautifully designed Sogenchi Teien garden, connected to Tenryu-ji Temple, is another peaceful place to explore. The garden’s traditional landscaping and tranquil ponds make it a perfect spot to reflect and appreciate Kyoto’s natural beauty.

Arashiyama Park & Observation Deck:
For panoramic views, head to the observation deck at Arashiyama Park. From here, you’ll get breathtaking views of the river, the lush landscape, and the surrounding mountains. It’s a great spot to snap some unforgettable photos.

Temples to Explore:
Arashiyama is also home to some beautiful temples. Don’t miss Adashino Nenbutsuji, a quieter, lesser-known temple with its own bamboo path and peaceful ambiance. Another fascinating temple is Otagi Nenbutsuji, which stands out for its collection of over 1,000 stone sculptures, each depicting unique expressions and emotions of different people—something truly special to see.

With its combination of nature, wildlife, and culture, Arashiyama is an enriching day trip that offers a little bit of everything. Whether you’re hiking, temple-hopping, or just soaking in the bamboo’s beauty, this area of Kyoto is truly unforgettable.
